New airport to be constructed in Busan, South Korea

The government of South Korea has confirmed that a new airport will be constructed in Busan. Yonhap News Agency has reported that South Korea’s second largest city with soon have a new airport on Gadeok Island, which is Busan’s largest island.

The previous administration of Park Geun-hye’s conservative party planned to expand the current Gimhae Airport in Busan, but current President Moon Jae-in’s democratic party decided against it in late 2020 after reviewing a feasibility study. The new airport on Gadeok Island should be operational in 2030. The project cost is planned at around US$6.7 billion, but critics of the project claim it may rise to around US$25 billion.
