Sydney LRT extension opens without ceremony (Australia)

Sydney’s AU$2.96 billion Light Rail project opened its final section today. No ceremony was held, which was due to the social distancing restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The line now runs from Anzac Parade to Kingsford, in the city’s south east. This has added adding another five stops to the line between Circular Quay and Randwick, which opened at the end of 2019. Ridership will remain low as Australians are told to remain indoors other than for essential shopping, exercise, schooling, and medical-related trips.

This now completes the Central Business District LRT programme, which had an orginal budget of AU$1.6 billion.
