Australia close to approving Hydro power project

Australia seems likely to approve the construction of their first new hydropower project in almost 40 years as Genex has come to an agreement with EnergyAustralia for the 2,000MWh Kidston storage project.

The Kidston project was announced on Monday morning after months of discussions between the two parties.

Genex can operate the plant for 30 years. EnergyAustralia will sign up for a 10-year agreement, with options to extend for an initial 10-year period and then a further 10-year period.

Located 280km north west of Townsville, the project has the potential to deliver flexible power into Australia’s National Electricity Market.
